THE FIRST SNA DISTINGUISHED LECTURE
Title: The Role of Art in National Transformation
As part of the celebrations to mark its 50th anniversary themed The Role of Art in National Transformation, the Society of Nigerian Artists initiated its Distinguished Lecture Series, which aims to grow public dialogue and critical debate centered on contemporary art developments in Nigeria. It is a platform for today’s most celebrated artists, thinkers, writers, curators, critics and art historians to share their knowledge, perspectives and ideas on the role of art in shaping society.
The lecture which held on June 11, 2013, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs was delivered by one of Africa’s most important contemporary artists, Romuald Hazoume from the Republic of Benin whose work has been widely exhibited in major museums and galleries including the British Museum, the Guggenheim, Bilboa, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, ICP, New York and the Mori Museum, Tokyo. He has also won many prestigious prizes, including the Arnold Bode Prize awarded at the Documenta 12 (2007).
