Application

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM

1. ELIGIBILITY

Ensure that you meet minimum requirements outlined in the College of Fellows’ criteria.  An applicant to the College of Fellows must:

  • Be a current SNA member;
  • Have a minimum of 20 years (240 months) of experience as a visual arts practitioner and/or visual arts educator.

Experience for practitioners and educators includes full-time performance in professional positions with visual arts titles and/or teaching responsibilities where you can verify that your primary work (more than 50 percent of your time) was in the practice of visual arts or instruction of students pursuing majors or sequences of study in visual arts.

Teaching visual arts courses and performing visual arts duties part-time are difficult to assess for compliance with the SNA requirement of a minimum of 20 years of professional service.  Consideration of your experience in visual arts will be based on professional responsibilities that can be clearly described and verified by employers, clients or colleagues for performance and length of time. Freelance services and additional functions listed on the application as work in the profession can be considered if a minimum of 120 hours per month was devoted to visual arts activities or visual arts teaching.

2. Application Criteria

Provide clear evidence of how you have met all of the criteria for becoming a Fellow and have:

  • Demonstrated superior professional capability and influence,
  • Advanced the state of the profession,
  • Contributed to SNA or other professional, non-profit, not-for-profit, civic or community organisations through volunteer service and leadership, and
  • Served as a role model to other members of the profession, students and your community.

You are responsible for providing evidence of meeting these criteria. Submitting misleading or false information will automatically disqualify an individual from consideration.

3. Chapter Comment Form and Letter

The Chairman of your Chapter who knows you and your contributions to the visual arts profession is asked to submit a Comment Form with a letter. The form requests that the Executive Committee of the Chapter discuss your role within that Chapter privately and confidentially and give the Fellows Selection Committee comments. A signed letter from your Chapter Chairman must accompany this form and explain why the comments were made. This letter is one of the six required letters of support listed in instruction No. 4, “Letters of Support.”

  • Write the letter on official, business or personal letterhead.
  • See “Letter of Support Guidelines,” instruction No. 4, sixth bullet point.
  • Make sure the Comment Form and letter both have your Chapter Chairman’s original or electronic signature.
  • Please note:
  • An emailed message without the required, signed Comment Form and letter cannot be considered.
  • Your Chapter Chairman can submit Comment Forms and letters for multiple applicants who meet the criteria and for membership in the SNA College of Fellows.

The Comment Form and letter must both be sent directly to the SNA College of Fellows and received no later than the application submission deadline. Submit:

4. Letters of Support

  • Identify four individuals to write letters of support in addition to the Zone/Chapter form and letter described in instruction No. 3:
    • Two from individuals who are visual arts practitioners or visual arts educators. Please consider whom you ask to write these letters carefully.  A letter from a journalist who heads an academic department that includes the university’s visual arts classes is likely to be questioned.
    • One from an individual who is not a visual arts practitioner or visual arts educator.
    • One letter from your Chapter Chairman that must be submitted with the Comment Form, described in detail in instruction No. 3, “Zone/Chapter Leadership Comment Form and Letter.”

    • Add something to your application, not repeat your resume or application. The most effective letters add content and substance to your application, expand upon an example you have used or give a more complete picture of your excellent performance.
  • Writers should:
  • know you and/or your work,
  • briefly explain why/how he or she is in a position to write on your behalf,
    • address College of Fellows criteria
      • your superior professional capabilities and achievements,
      • what you have done to advance the visual arts profession,
      • your service and leadership,
      • your reputation, integrity, how you have been a role model or how you have demonstrated the highest ethical standards.
