The Society of Nigerian Artists Celebrates at Oshinowo 70

On February 6 this year, Kolade Oshinowo NPOM, a renowned artist, teacher, administrator and former President of the Society of Nigerian Artists will turn 70 years old.

To mark his anniversary, artists across the country represented by various subgroups and led by the Society of Nigerian Artists, will organise a series of events.

Oshinowo who retired as a chief lecturer at the Yaba College of Technology ten years ago has over the years been a consistent fixture in art circles, exhibiting, mentoring and supporting the younger generation of artists.

His legacy rests largely in his many contributions to the development of the visual arts in general and more specifically, the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) . According to Dr Kunle Adeyemi, Chairman of the Kolade Oshinowo @70 Planning Committee,” it is for these and so many other reasons, the general artist’s community has come together to celebrate one of their own.

Events lined up to celebrate this icon include a three – day workshop organised by Prof. Peju Layiwola at the Women and Youth Art Foundation (WYART) in Surulere, Lagos. Opening on February 5 from 10.00am, the workshop rounds up from 2pm with a closing ceremony on February 7.

​This will be followed on Thursday February 8 with “ Kolade Oshinowo: Life before the Artists”, organised by Olu Ajayi, a former chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the SNA. The programme will hold at the Art Complex, Yaba College of Technology from 10.00am.

On February 9, an “ Art Stampede“ in honour of Oshinowo will hold, featuring Toyin Akinosho and Jahman Anikulapo of the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA) at the Art Complex , Yaba College of Technology from 4pm.

A retrospective exhibition of Oshinowo’s works will also open from 4pm the following day, February 10, at Mydrim Gallery, Ikoyi.

In addition, the Lagos State Chapter of the Society of Nigerian Artists will celebrate Oshinowo during its “SNA Week”, taking place from February 16 to 23.

This will be followed by another exhibition themed “Living Legend: A Tribute to Mr. Kolade Oshinowo”, by the School of Art, Design and Printing of the Yaba College of Technology. It opens at 4pm on February 23 at the Yusuf Grillo Gallery, Yaba College of Technology.

The celebrations will continue with an international conference themed “ The Trajectory of Kolade Oshinowo on Contemporary Visual Arts Practice”. Holding between April 4 and 6, the conference shall feature papers from various scholars who will provide a deeper understanding of Oshinowo, his underlying philosophy and his work.

The events marking Kolade Oshinowo’s 70th anniversary will come to a close with a Gala sponsored and organised by the national body of the Society of Nigerian Artists on April 6. Highlights of the evening include the conferment of a Lifetime Achievement award on the artist and a discussion of his work by select collectors.

These events are being put together by Lagos State Government, the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) both the National and Lagos State Chapter, Yaba College of Technology, the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos, the Nigerian Society for Education through Arts (NSEA), Cultural and Creative Arts Foundation (CCAF), Guild of Professional Fine Artists (GFA), Women and Youth Arts Foundation, Agufon Publications, Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), Committee On Relevant Art (CORA), Mydrim Gallery,Omo- Oba Yemisi Adededoyin  Shyllon Art Foundation (OYASAF), Phephe Planet Productions, and Oshinowo’s contemporaries and former students.
